Servile means behaving in an overly submissive way that shows no self-respect, like someone desperately trying to please a more powerful person. When someone acts servile, they grovel, fawn, and abandon their dignity to curry favor, going far beyond normal politeness or respect.

Picture a student who laughs at every single thing the popular kids say, agrees with everything they do, and constantly offers to do their homework for them, hoping they'll be accepted. That's servile behavior. Or imagine someone at work who constantly flatters the boss with exaggerated compliments, volunteers for every task before being asked, and never expresses their own opinion. They're being servile.

Servile doesn't mean helping others or showing respect. A good employee works hard and treats their boss professionally. A servile employee acts like they have no backbone, desperately seeking approval through excessive flattery and submission.

People often lose respect for servile behavior because it seems fake and calculating. Real respect comes from treating others well while maintaining your own dignity and honest opinions. When you stand up for yourself respectfully and do good work without groveling, you earn genuine respect rather than the uncomfortable pity that servile behavior can produce.
