seventh
Coming after six others in order.
Seventh means the item that comes after six others in a sequence or order. If you're standing in line and six people are ahead of you, you're in the seventh position. The seventh inning of a baseball game comes after six innings have been played. The seventh grade follows sixth grade.
The word can also describe one of seven equal parts of something. If you split a pizza into seven slices, each slice is one seventh of the whole pizza. In math, you'd write this as 1/7. When a recipe calls for one seventh of a cup of sugar, you're measuring out one part of something divided into seven equal portions.
Seventh often appears in dates and addresses too: July 7th is the seventh day of the month, and you might live on Seventh Street or on the seventh floor of a building. Musicians use the word differently: a seventh in music describes the interval between two notes that are seven steps apart on the scale, creating a distinctive sound that composers use to add tension or interest to their melodies.
