shepherdess
A girl or woman whose job is to take care of sheep.
A shepherdess is a girl or woman whose job is to watch over and care for a flock of sheep. While shepherd can refer to anyone who tends sheep, shepherdess specifically means a female shepherd.
For thousands of years, shepherds and shepherdesses have lived outdoors with their flocks, guiding sheep to good grazing land, protecting them from predators like wolves, and making sure none wander off and get lost. A shepherdess might use a long wooden staff to help guide the sheep and a loyal dog to help keep the flock together.
In many old stories and paintings, shepherdesses appear as romantic figures in pastoral settings, often depicted with crooks (curved staffs) and gentle lambs. But the real work was demanding: a shepherdess had to be tough, alert, and capable of handling unpredictable animals and harsh weather, sometimes spending weeks alone in remote pastures.
Today, most people simply use shepherd regardless of gender, though you'll still encounter shepherdess in older literature, folk tales, and historical contexts.
