shoe
A covering worn on your foot to protect it.
A shoe is a protective covering for your foot, usually made of leather, rubber, fabric, or other sturdy materials. Shoes have a solid bottom called a sole that separates your feet from rough ground, and they come in countless styles: sneakers for running, boots for hiking, dress shoes for formal occasions, sandals for warm weather.
For most of human history, people either went barefoot or wore simple sandals. The invention of shoes with enclosed toes and heels changed how far people could travel and what terrain they could cross. Today, specialized shoes exist for almost every activity: cleats grip turf for soccer, ballet slippers flex for dancing, climbing shoes stick to rock faces.
When someone says they wouldn't want to be in your shoes, they mean they're glad they don't face your particular challenge or situation. If you fill someone's shoes, you take over their role or responsibilities, especially after they've done something impressive. And when you put yourself in someone else's shoes, you try to imagine how they feel or what they're experiencing.
