shooter
Someone who shoots, usually with a gun or in sports.
A shooter is someone who shoots something, most commonly referring to someone who shoots a gun or bow. In basketball, a good shooter can consistently make baskets from far away. In hockey, a strong shooter can fire the puck past the goalie. A sharpshooter is someone with exceptional shooting accuracy.
The word also describes certain types of video games where players aim and fire at targets or opponents. In a first-person shooter, you see the game world through your character's eyes while competing against other players or computer-controlled enemies. Popular shooters include games where players work together on missions or compete in tournaments.
In photography, shooter is casual slang for a photographer, someone who “shoots” pictures with a camera.
Less commonly, a shooter can mean a marble used in the game of marbles (usually your largest, favorite marble that you flick at the others).
When you hear about a shooter in sports, it usually means someone particularly skilled at scoring from a distance. Basketball teams value players who are reliable shooters because they can score points even when defenders give them space.
