shortstop
A baseball player who fields between second and third base.
A shortstop is a baseball player who defends the area between second and third base. Today, the shortstop is one of the most athletic and important defensive players on the field.
The shortstop must cover a huge area of the infield, racing left or right to catch hard-hit ground balls, then throwing quickly and accurately to first base to get the runner out. They also help turn double plays with the second baseman, catching the ball near second base and firing it to first base before two runners can reach safely. A great shortstop needs quick reflexes, a strong throwing arm, and the ability to make split-second decisions.
Some of the most exciting players in baseball history have been shortstops, including Derek Jeter, Cal Ripken Jr., and Honus Wagner. Because the position requires such a rare combination of speed, throwing accuracy, and baseball instincts, talented shortstops are highly valued by teams. In youth baseball, coaches often put one of their best all-around athletes at shortstop.
