shower
A bathroom device that sprays water on you for washing.
- A device that sprays water from above so you can wash yourself while standing up. When you take a shower, you stand under the streams of water to get clean. Most showers have controls to adjust the water temperature and pressure. Unlike a bath, where you sit in still water, a shower keeps fresh water flowing over you.
- A brief fall of rain, or anything that falls in quantity from above. A rain shower might last only a few minutes before the sun comes back out. When confetti falls on parade watchers, it creates a shower of colored paper. A meteor shower happens when many shooting stars appear to rain down from the same part of the sky. You might also give someone a shower of compliments, meaning many kind words at once.
As a verb, shower means to spray with water, to rain briefly, or to give someone many things at once. Parents might shower their child with affection after a long trip, meaning they give lots of hugs and attention all at once.
