shriek
A sudden, loud, high-pitched scream or cry.
A shriek is a loud, high-pitched scream that usually bursts out suddenly. When someone sees a spider crawl across their desk, they might let out a shriek of surprise. When kids on a roller coaster plunge down the first big drop, their shrieks of excitement fill the air.
Shrieks aren't quiet or controlled. They're sharp, piercing sounds that make everyone nearby turn around immediately. You might shriek in fear when something startles you, shriek with laughter at something hilarious, or shriek in frustration when your computer crashes right before you save your work.
The word can also be used as a verb: “She shrieked when she realized she'd won.” Birds sometimes shriek too, especially certain species like hawks or parrots, with their harsh, carrying calls.
Unlike a shout, which can be low and forceful, a shriek is always high and sharp. It's the kind of sound that cuts through other noise and grabs attention instantly, whether it comes from genuine alarm or pure excitement.
