sidesaddle
A special way to ride a horse with both legs together.
Sidesaddle is a way of riding a horse where the rider sits with both legs on the same side of the horse instead of straddling it with one leg on each side. A sidesaddle is also the special saddle designed for this style of riding.
This riding method became popular centuries ago when women wore long skirts and dresses that made it difficult or considered immodest to sit astride a horse with legs apart. The sidesaddle has a unique design with special supports that help the rider stay secure and balanced despite having both legs on one side. One leg hooks around a curved support called a pommel, while the other leg rests against the horse's side.
Riding sidesaddle requires excellent balance and skill, often more than regular riding. The rider must use their posture and subtle movements to control the horse, since their legs aren't in the usual position. Today, you'll mostly see sidesaddle riding at historical demonstrations, parades, or special competitions where people showcase traditional equestrian skills. While it's no longer the standard way women ride horses, some riders still practice it as a challenging and elegant art form.
