A signboard is a large, flat board or panel that displays information, advertisements, or directions. You see signboards everywhere: restaurants use them to show their menus and daily specials, stores hang them above their doors to announce what they sell, and highways have signboards telling drivers which exit to take or how far it is to the next city.
Before electric lights and digital screens became common, painted signboards were the main way businesses attracted customers. A bakery might have had a wooden signboard shaped like a loaf of bread hanging outside its door. A cobbler's signboard might have shown a boot. These visual symbols helped people who couldn't read still find the shops they needed.
Today's signboards range from simple wooden boards with hand-painted letters to large illuminated panels with bright colors and professional graphics. Construction sites use signboards to identify the builders and architects working on a project. Schools use signboards to welcome visitors or announce upcoming events.
Today we also have digital signs and electronic billboards, but the traditional signboard remains a straightforward, reliable way to communicate messages to anyone passing by.
