silhouette
A dark outline or shape seen against a bright background.
A silhouette is the dark outline or shape of something seen against a lighter background. When you stand in front of a bright window, your silhouette is your shape filled in completely with darkness, like a shadow with no details inside. You can't see someone's face or clothing in a silhouette, just their outline.
Before photography existed, silhouette portraits were a popular and affordable way to capture someone's profile. Artists would have a person sit sideways between a candle and a wall, then trace the shadow of their profile onto paper and cut it out. These simple black cutouts became treasured keepsakes.
Today you might see silhouettes everywhere: trees against a sunset sky, a city skyline at dusk, or a person standing in a doorway with bright light behind them. Filmmakers use silhouettes to create mystery or drama, showing a character's shape without revealing their identity. When you can recognize something just by its outline, like a familiar friend walking toward you or a distinctive building on the horizon, you're recognizing its silhouette.
