silverware
Forks, knives, and spoons used for eating meals.
Silverware refers to the utensils you use for eating: forks, knives, and spoons. When you set the table for dinner, you put out the silverware so everyone has tools for their meal.
Real silver utensils looked beautiful and showed that a family had money, but they also needed frequent polishing to stay shiny. Today, most silverware is made from stainless steel, which is much more practical: it doesn't tarnish, costs less, and can go in the dishwasher. But we still call it silverware even though it contains no silver.
You might also hear people call it flatware or cutlery. Some people say utensils, which is the most general term.
Different cultures use different silverware or other eating tools. In many Asian countries, people eat with chopsticks instead of forks. In some places, people traditionally eat with their hands. In many American homes, learning to use silverware properly, like holding your fork correctly or using a knife to cut your food, is considered an important part of table manners.
