sixtieth
The position of number sixty in a line or list.
Sixtieth means number sixty in a sequence, coming after the fifty-ninth and before the sixty-first. When something is the sixtieth item in a list or the sixtieth person in line, there are fifty-nine things or people ahead of it.
The word often appears when marking time or milestones. A sixtieth birthday celebrates six full decades of life, which is why people sometimes throw bigger parties for this milestone. The sixtieth anniversary of an important event, like the end of World War II or the founding of a school, marks sixty years since it happened.
Sixtieth can also mean one part out of sixty equal parts. If you divide a pizza into sixty slices (which would be extremely thin slices!), each piece represents one sixtieth of the whole pizza. This fraction form is written as 1/60.
When the sixtieth second ticks by on a clock, an entire minute has passed, because there are sixty seconds in a minute.
