skillful
Having strong ability at something from lots of practice.
Skillful means having or showing impressive ability gained through practice and experience. A skillful basketball player doesn't just know the rules: they can dribble without looking, make precise passes, and adjust their shot mid-air. A skillful writer chooses exactly the right words to make readers laugh or think deeply.
Skillfulness comes from deliberate practice over time. When you first learn to ride a bike, you wobble and struggle. After months of practice, your movements become smooth and confident. That's you becoming skillful. A skillful carpenter can measure, cut, and join wood so precisely that pieces fit together perfectly. A skillful negotiator can help two arguing friends find a solution that makes both happy.
The word emphasizes both ability and the quality of execution. Someone might be able to play piano, but a skillful pianist makes it look effortless and sounds beautiful. You can also use the related word skillfully to describe how someone does something: “She skillfully avoided the puddles while running to catch the bus.”
Notice that skillful is different from talented. Talent suggests natural ability, but skillfulness comes from dedication and practice.
