skylark
A small bird that sings high in the sky.
A skylark is a small brown bird famous for its beautiful singing. What makes skylarks special is where they sing: high in the air. While most birds sing from trees or fences, a skylark flies straight up into the sky, sometimes so high you can barely see it, and pours out a long, complex song as it hovers there. Imagine a tiny bird floating hundreds of feet above a meadow, filling the air with music for several minutes without stopping.
Skylarks live in open grasslands and farmlands across Europe and Asia. Their song has inspired poets and musicians for centuries. The English poet Percy Shelley wrote a famous poem called “To a Skylark,” celebrating how this small bird could create something so joyful and beautiful.
The word also means to play around or have fun in a carefree, lighthearted way. When kids skylark in the playground, they're running around playfully, maybe being a bit silly, and enjoying themselves without any serious purpose. If someone tells you to stop skylarking and get to work, they're saying to quit fooling around and focus on what needs to be done.
