sleep
A natural state of rest when your body and mind relax.
Sleep is the natural state of rest when your body and mind shut down most of their active work for several hours. When you sleep, your eyes close, your muscles relax, your breathing slows, and your consciousness fades. You're not awake, but you're not gone either: your brain stays busy processing memories, solving problems, and repairing your body.
Everyone needs sleep, though the amount varies. Young children might need 10 or 11 hours, while adults function on 7 or 8. Without enough sleep, concentration becomes difficult, emotions get harder to control, and even simple tasks feel exhausting. Athletes know that sleep helps muscles recover after hard training. Students discover that a good night's sleep before a test often matters as much as studying.
The word also appears in common expressions. When your foot falls asleep, it gets that tingly, numb feeling from sitting too long in one position. When someone says “let me sleep on it,” they mean they want time to think about a decision overnight. And when a problem is finally resolved, people sometimes say they can sleep easily again, meaning they feel relieved and peaceful.
