smattering
A small, scattered amount of something.
A smattering is a small, scattered amount of something, just enough to give you a taste but nowhere near complete knowledge or coverage.
If you've learned a smattering of Spanish, you might know how to order food and say hello, but you couldn't hold a real conversation. A smattering of snow means a few flakes are falling, not enough to build a snowman or cancel school. When someone has a smattering of musical ability, they can plunk out a simple tune on the piano but couldn't perform a complicated piece.
The word suggests something light and incomplete, bits and pieces rather than the whole picture. A crowd might include a smattering of older people among mostly younger ones. A garden might have a smattering of wildflowers poking up between the grass.
