s'more
A sweet campfire treat with marshmallow, chocolate, and crackers.
A s'more is a sweet campfire treat made by sandwiching a toasted marshmallow and a piece of chocolate between two graham crackers. The name comes from “some more,” because they're so delicious that people always want another one.
Making s'mores is a classic camping tradition. You spear a marshmallow on a stick and hold it over the fire until it turns golden brown (or catches fire if you're not careful). The hot marshmallow melts the chocolate as you press everything together between the crackers. The combination creates a warm, gooey, messy dessert that tastes like summer nights outdoors.
S'mores became popular in America in the 1920s when a recipe appeared in a Girl Scout handbook. Since then, they've become so tied to camping that people sometimes make them at backyard fire pits or even in their kitchens using ovens or microwaves when they're craving that campfire experience.
The treat has inspired countless variations: s'more-flavored ice cream, s'more Pop-Tarts, s'more coffee drinks. But the original campfire version, with its toasted marshmallow and melted chocolate, remains the gold standard.
