smudgy
Marked with blurry, messy smears that make it unclear.
Smudgy describes something marked by smears, blurs, or unclear spots that make it look messy or hard to see clearly. When you accidentally drag your hand across wet ink or pencil marks, you create a smudgy mess. A window covered with fingerprints looks smudgy. So does a drawing that someone touched before the charcoal dried.
The word often describes things that should be clear or clean but aren't. Your glasses might get smudgy after you touch the lenses. A whiteboard can look smudgy if someone erases it carelessly, leaving ghost marks behind. Even makeup can look smudgy if it gets rubbed or wears off unevenly.
Artists sometimes create smudgy effects on purpose. They might smudge charcoal or pastels with their fingers to create soft shadows or blend colors together. But usually, smudgy means unintentionally unclear or blurred, like when rain makes the words on a poster smudgy and difficult to read.
