snack
A small amount of food eaten between regular meals.
Snack is a small amount of food you eat between regular meals. When you grab an apple after school or munch on crackers while doing homework, you're having a snack. Unlike breakfast, lunch, or dinner, a snack isn't meant to fill you up completely. It's just enough to keep your energy up until the next meal.
The word can also be used as a verb: when you snack on pretzels during a movie, you're eating them bit by bit rather than sitting down to a full meal. Some people snack constantly throughout the day, while others only eat at mealtimes.
The idea of snacking has changed throughout history. A hundred years ago, most people ate only at mealtimes. Today, with busy schedules and food available everywhere, snacking has become a normal part of how many people eat.
