A sockeye is a species of Pacific salmon known for its deep red flesh and dramatic life cycle. These fish are born in freshwater lakes and rivers, swim thousands of miles to the ocean where they spend most of their lives, then return to the exact same stream where they were born to lay their eggs.
During their ocean years, sockeye salmon have blue-green backs and silver sides. But when they return to freshwater to spawn, they transform: their bodies turn bright red and their heads turn green, creating one of nature's most striking color changes. This transformation happens because they stop eating once they enter freshwater and their bodies begin breaking down, using their remaining energy for their final mission.
Sockeye are prized for their rich, flavorful meat, which stays deep red even when cooked. The name comes from a Coast Salish word meaning “fish of fishes,” reflecting how important these salmon were to Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. Bristol Bay in Alaska supports the world's largest sockeye run, with tens of millions of fish returning each summer in a spectacle that feeds bears, eagles, and entire ecosystems.
