souvenir
An object kept to remember a special place or event.
A souvenir is an object you keep to help you remember a place you visited or a special experience you had. The word comes from French and means “to remember.”
When families travel, they often buy souvenirs: a miniature Statue of Liberty from New York, a seashell from the beach, or a postcard from a national park. These objects aren't valuable because they're expensive (most aren't), but because they connect you back to meaningful memories. Years later, you might spot that snow globe on your shelf and instantly recall the trip when you got it.
Souvenirs can be purchased items, like T-shirts or keychains, but they can also be things you simply collect: a smooth stone from a riverbed, a pressed flower from a garden, or a ticket stub from your first concert. Some people keep souvenir programs from baseball games or theater performances.
The key quality of a souvenir is its ability to transport your mind back to a moment or place. That cheap plastic keychain might seem silly to someone else, but to you, it holds the memory of standing at the Grand Canyon with your family, feeling the wind and marveling at something magnificent.
