When America declared independence in 1776, it claimed sovereignty: the right to rule itself rather than being controlled by Britain.

A sovereign can also be a ruler with ultimate authority, like a king or queen. Queen Elizabeth II was the sovereign of the United Kingdom, meaning she held the highest position in the nation, even though Parliament handled most governing. In medieval times, a sovereign's word was law within their kingdom.

The word captures something important about power: being truly in charge and exercising complete authority. When you're sovereign, you're independent and self-governing. Countries guard their sovereignty carefully because it means they can choose their own path. A sovereign state controls its borders, makes treaties with other nations, and protects its citizens according to its own values and laws.

You might hear someone describe a person as having a “sovereign spirit,” meaning they think independently and don't just go along with the crowd. But most often, sovereign describes nations and rulers who answer to no higher earthly authority.
