spacesuit
A special suit that keeps astronauts alive and safe in space.
A spacesuit is a specially designed outfit that keeps astronauts alive in the deadly environment of outer space. Without Earth's atmosphere to provide oxygen and pressure, and with temperatures swinging from hundreds of degrees below zero to hundreds above, a human body would survive only seconds in space. A spacesuit solves these problems by creating a tiny, portable version of Earth's environment that an astronaut can wear.
Think of it as a personal spacecraft wrapped around your body. The suit provides oxygen to breathe, removes the carbon dioxide you exhale, maintains the right pressure so your blood doesn't boil, and regulates temperature to keep you from freezing or overheating. It also shields you from dangerous radiation and protects against tiny meteoroids zipping through space.
Modern spacesuits are technological marvels containing layers of specialized materials, life support systems, communication equipment, and even a drink bag with a straw inside the helmet. They're so complex that astronauts need help getting into them, and so bulky that moving around requires serious effort. When astronauts conduct spacewalks to repair satellites or work on the International Space Station, they're trusting their lives to these remarkable suits. Engineers continue improving spacesuit designs for future missions to the Moon and Mars, where astronauts will need even more advanced protection.
