speakerphone
A phone feature that lets everyone hear and talk hands-free.
A speakerphone is a telephone feature that lets you talk and listen without holding the phone to your ear. Instead of pressing the phone against your head, you can set it down and have a conversation while the sound comes out of a speaker loud enough for everyone nearby to hear.
Speakerphones are useful when multiple people need to join the same conversation. In an office, a team might gather around a conference table with the phone on speakerphone so everyone can talk to a client at once. At home, your parents might put a call on speakerphone so the whole family can wish Grandma happy birthday together.
The feature works both ways: a microphone picks up your voice from across the room, and a speaker broadcasts the other person's voice. Most smartphones have a speakerphone button you can tap during a call. Cars often have built-in speakerphones so drivers can talk while keeping their hands on the wheel.
One catch: speakerphone conversations aren't private, since anyone nearby can hear both sides of the call. That's perfect for group conversations but awkward if you're discussing something personal in a crowded room.
