spineless
Lacking courage to stand up for what is right.
Spineless means lacking courage or determination. When someone is described as spineless, they avoid standing up for what's right because they're too afraid of what others might think or do. A spineless person might watch a classmate get bullied but say nothing, or agree with whatever the loudest person in the group says, even when they know it's wrong.
Just as your spine gives your body structure and strength, having a metaphorical spine means having the inner strength to do what's right even when it's difficult or unpopular.
You might see someone called spineless for backing down from a challenge they should face, or for changing their position on something important just because it becomes inconvenient. A spineless leader makes decisions based on polls and popularity rather than principle. A spineless friend might abandon you when supporting you becomes socially awkward.
The opposite qualities include having backbone, being principled, or showing courage. While it's normal to feel scared sometimes, being spineless means letting that fear control your choices repeatedly, especially when others are counting on you to do the right thing.
