Splotchy describes something covered with irregular spots, blotches, or patches of different colors. When you spill juice on your shirt and it dries unevenly, leaving darker and lighter areas, the fabric looks splotchy. A painter who doesn't use enough coats might end up with walls that appear splotchy, with some areas showing more color than others.

The word often describes skin too. When someone gets nervous or embarrassed, their face might become splotchy with patches of red. After being out in the cold, your hands might look splotchy with uneven pink and white areas. A sunburn can heal in a splotchy way, with some spots peeling while others stay red.

Splotchy captures that uneven, patchy quality where colors or tones aren't smooth or uniform. It's different from simply being spotted or dotted, which suggests more regular patterns. A leopard has spots, but something splotchy looks more random and messy, like watercolors that didn't quite blend right or a banana that's ripening unevenly with brown patches appearing here and there.
