sportsman
A person who plays sports fairly and respectfully.
A sportsman is someone who plays sports with fairness, grace, and respect for others, whether winning or losing. The word emphasizes both athletic skill and character: a true sportsman congratulates opponents after a hard-fought game, follows the rules even when the referee isn't looking, and treats teammates and competitors with dignity.
When someone displays sportsmanship, they show these qualities in action. A tennis player who honestly calls a ball “in” even though it helps her opponent is demonstrating sportsmanship. A soccer player who helps an injured opponent off the field, even during an important match, acts like a sportsman.
The word traditionally referred to men, but today we often use athlete or competitor to describe anyone who plays sports, regardless of gender. Some people still say sportswoman for female athletes, and many people use sportsman in a general way for any fair and respectful player. The important thing isn't the label but the spirit: playing hard, playing fair, and respecting the game and everyone in it.
A sportsman understands that how you play matters as much as whether you win. Someone might be incredibly talented but still not be considered a good sportsman if they argue with referees, mock opponents, or bend the rules. True sportsmanship means caring about the integrity of the game itself.
