squad car
A police car used by officers while they are on patrol.
A squad car is a police car used by officers on patrol. You've probably seen these distinctive vehicles driving through your neighborhood with their light bars on top, ready to respond quickly to emergencies or calls for help.
Squad cars are specially equipped for police work. They have powerful engines to pursue speeding vehicles if needed, radios to communicate with dispatchers and other officers, and computers to check license plates or criminal records. The trunk usually holds emergency equipment like first aid kits and traffic cones. Many squad cars also have cameras mounted on the dashboard to record traffic stops and incidents.
The word squad originally referred to a small military unit, and police departments adopted the term for their patrol cars because officers often work in pairs or small teams. When you see a squad car parked outside a school, it might mean an officer is visiting to talk about safety. When you see one racing past with lights flashing and sirens wailing, it's heading to help someone who needs assistance right away.
Different police departments paint their squad cars in different colors and patterns. Some are black and white, others are blue and white, and a few departments use unmarked cars that look like regular vehicles so officers can patrol without being obvious.
