stairway
A set of steps that connects one level to another.
A stairway is a set of steps that connects one level of a building to another. While we often use “stairs” and “stairway” interchangeably, a stairway specifically refers to the entire structure: the steps themselves, the railings on the sides, and sometimes the space or passage they occupy. Think of the stairway in your school connecting the first floor to the second, or the grand stairway in a museum curving elegantly upward.
Stairways can be straight, curved, or spiral. Some are narrow and practical, built simply to get people from one floor to another. Others are wide and impressive, designed to make a statement. The famous stairway in the U.S. Capitol building, for instance, serves both practical and symbolic purposes: it moves people between floors while also representing importance and grandeur.
The word can also carry a sense of journey or passage. When someone talks about a stairway to success, they mean the steps you take to achieve your goals. For many children, stairs represent adventure: a way to explore different parts of a house, a place to sit and read, or steps to climb two at a time.
