standstill
A complete stop where nothing moves or makes progress.
When something comes to a standstill, it stops moving completely. Picture a busy highway where traffic suddenly grinds to a standstill because of an accident: every car sits motionless, engines idling, nobody going anywhere. Or imagine a factory assembly line that comes to a standstill when the power goes out, with half-built products frozen in place.
A standstill means zero progress: everything has stopped entirely. When negotiations reach a standstill, both sides have stopped talking and nothing is being decided. When construction comes to a standstill, workers stand around with nothing to do because something has halted the entire project.
You might hear about a city coming to a standstill during a massive snowstorm, meaning normal activity has stopped: schools close, roads become impassable, and everyone stays home. The word suggests that something which should be moving or progressing has instead become completely stuck or frozen in place, waiting for whatever obstacle is blocking it to be cleared away.
