stateroom
A private bedroom for passengers on a ship or train.
A stateroom is a private bedroom on a ship or train, especially a large and comfortable one. On cruise ships, passengers sleep in staterooms rather than regular hotel rooms. The fanciest staterooms might have their own balconies overlooking the ocean, while simpler ones have bunk beds and portholes.
In the past, these rooms were often decorated as elegantly as rooms in a mansion, with wood paneling and fine furniture. Today, cruise ships still use the term stateroom to describe passenger cabins, though they range from small and basic to luxurious suites.
On trains, especially older passenger trains, a stateroom was a private sleeping compartment with fold-down beds. Passengers could close the door and have privacy during long overnight journeys, instead of sitting in regular seats for hours. The Orient Express, a famous luxury train, was known for its elegant staterooms, where passengers could sleep comfortably while traveling across Europe.
