stick insect
An insect that looks like a thin twig or small branch.
A stick insect is a remarkable creature that has evolved to look almost exactly like a twig or small branch. These insects have long, thin bodies and legs that match the color and texture of the plants they live on, making them nearly invisible to hungry birds and other predators. Some species even sway gently back and forth to mimic a twig moving in the breeze.
Stick insects belong to an order called Phasmatodea. This name fits perfectly since they seem to vanish right before your eyes when sitting still on a branch. There are thousands of species worldwide, living mostly in tropical and temperate forests. Some are only a few inches long, while others can grow longer than your forearm.
These peaceful vegetarians munch on leaves and move slowly through the trees. If you spot one in nature, you've witnessed one of the animal kingdom's masters of disguise. Some people keep them as pets because they're gentle and fascinating to observe. When threatened, many stick insects can even drop a leg to escape, and then grow it back during their next molt.
