story
An account of events, real or imagined, told to others.
A story is an account of events, real or imagined, that unfolds over time. When you tell a friend what happened at recess, you're sharing a story. When you read about a dragon and a brave knight, that's a story too.
Stories have been central to human life for thousands of years. Before writing existed, people gathered around fires to share stories about their ancestors, explain natural phenomena, or teach important lessons. These oral traditions passed knowledge from generation to generation. Today, we encounter stories everywhere: in books, movies, conversations, news reports, and even video games.
Most stories include certain elements: characters (the people or creatures involved), a setting (where and when it happens), and a plot (the sequence of events, usually including some kind of problem or conflict). The best stories make you care about what happens next.
The word can also mean a level of a building. A three-story house has three floors stacked on top of each other.
When someone asks, “What's the story?” they might mean “What's going on?” or “What's the situation?” And if someone says you're telling stories, they might think you're exaggerating or not telling the complete truth.
