strip
To remove covering or clothing from something.
The word strip has several meanings:
- To remove the covering from something. When you strip the sheets off your bed to wash them, you're pulling them away completely. A painter might strip old paint from a wall before repainting.
- A long, narrow piece of something. A strip of paper might be an inch wide and a foot long. A strip of land could be a narrow section of property running alongside a road. Comic strips are called that because they traditionally appeared as horizontal strips in newspapers, with panels arranged in a row. Airplane runways are sometimes called landing strips because of their long, narrow shape.
- To take something away from someone or something. A knight might be stripped of his title and honors as punishment for betraying his king. A student caught cheating might be stripped of their award. This meaning suggests complete removal of something important or valuable, often as a consequence or penalty.
