suggestion
An idea you offer for someone to think about.
A suggestion is an idea you offer to someone without demanding they accept it. When you make a suggestion, you're proposing something that might help or improve a situation, but leaving the final choice to others. Your teacher might make a suggestion about which book to read for your report. A friend might suggest a different strategy for beating a difficult video game level.
Suggestions work differently than commands or requirements. If your parents suggest you bring a jacket, you could choose not to (though you might regret it later!). But if they require it, you don't have that choice. Good suggestions feel helpful rather than controlling. They say “here's an option to consider” instead of “you must do this.”
People value thoughtful suggestions because they show you're thinking about how to help. A suggestion box at school collects ideas from students. When someone says “I have a suggestion,” they're usually trying to make things better while respecting your freedom to decide. The best suggestions open up possibilities you hadn't considered before.
