suite
A set of connected rooms or things that belong together.
A suite (pronounced “sweet”) is a set of connected rooms or things that work together as a group.
In a fancy hotel, a suite gives you multiple connected rooms. You might have a living room with a couch and TV, a separate bedroom, and sometimes even a small kitchen. Families often book suites when traveling so they have space to spread out. A hotel might even have a Presidential Suite, the most luxurious set of rooms.
The word also describes groups of other things designed to work together. A software suite includes several computer programs that share information easily, like a word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation tool all made by the same company. A furniture suite means matching pieces like a couch, loveseat, and chair that look like they belong together.
In classical music, a suite is a collection of short pieces meant to be performed one after another, like a musical story told in chapters. Bach and Handel composed famous orchestral suites that are still performed today.
That core idea of connected parts belonging together runs through all its meanings. Whether it's rooms in a hotel, programs on your computer, or movements in a musical composition, a suite means connected parts forming a unified whole.
