sunshine
The bright light and warmth that come from the sun.
Sunshine is the light and warmth that comes directly from the sun. When you step outside on a clear morning and feel that bright warmth on your face, that's sunshine. It's what makes shadows appear, helps plants grow, and turns a gloomy day into one that feels full of possibility.
Sunshine powers almost everything on Earth. Plants use it to make food through photosynthesis, which feeds the animals that eat those plants, which feeds the animals that eat those animals. Solar panels capture sunshine and turn it into electricity. Even fossil fuels like coal and oil are ancient sunshine: stored energy from plants that grew millions of years ago.
People also use sunshine to describe someone with a cheerful, warm personality. A teacher might say, “You're a real ray of sunshine today!” to a student whose positive attitude lifts everyone's mood. Some states even have sunshine laws, which require government meetings to be open to the public, letting the metaphorical light shine on what officials are doing.
Without sunshine, Earth would be a frozen, dark planet. With it, we get weather, seasons, rainbows, and life itself.
