supervillain
A very powerful villain who fights against a superhero.
A supervillain is an extraordinarily powerful or clever villain who stands as the ultimate opponent for a superhero. While an ordinary villain might rob a bank or cause trouble in a neighborhood, a supervillain has abilities, resources, or intelligence that make them a threat to entire cities or even the world. Think of the Joker scheming against Batman, or Lex Luthor using his genius and wealth to challenge Superman.
What makes someone a supervillain rather than just a villain? Usually it's the scale of their ambitions and abilities. A supervillain might have superpowers like super strength or mind control, possess incredibly advanced technology, command armies of henchmen, or be so brilliant that their elaborate schemes require a superhero's special abilities to stop. The “super” in supervillain matches the “super” in superhero: they're evenly matched in a way that makes their conflict dramatic and exciting.
In stories, supervillains often have complex motivations beyond simple greed. Some want to reshape society according to their vision, others seek revenge for past wrongs (real or imagined), and some simply enjoy causing chaos. The best supervillain stories show us that heroes are defined by the challenges they face: the more formidable the supervillain, the more the hero must grow, think creatively, and demonstrate true courage to prevail.
