surmount
To overcome a difficult problem or challenge.
To surmount something means to overcome a difficult challenge or obstacle. When mountain climbers surmount a steep peak, they reach the top despite the difficulty. When a student surmounts their fear of public speaking to deliver a great presentation, they've conquered something that once held them back.
The word suggests rising above something that seemed hard or maybe even impossible. You might surmount a bad grade by studying harder and improving. A gymnast might surmount an injury to compete again. Communities surmount disasters by rebuilding together.
Notice the “mount” part of the word, which relates to mountains and climbing. When you surmount something, you're metaphorically climbing over it or getting past it. The obstacles you surmount might be physical, like a tall fence, or they might be personal challenges like shyness, doubt, or a difficult assignment. What matters is that you face the challenge directly and find a way through it, emerging stronger on the other side.
