surrounding
Being or existing all around a person, place, or thing.
Surrounding means to be all around something or someone on every side. When a castle has a moat surrounding it, water encircles the entire fortress. When you're surrounded by friends at lunch, they're sitting on all sides of you.
The word often describes physical position: mountains surrounding a valley, a fence surrounding a yard, or protesters surrounding a building. But it also describes less visible things. A mystery might be surrounding a strange event, meaning unanswered questions exist all around it. Someone might talk about the culture surrounding a sport, referring to all the traditions, fans, and excitement that exist around the game itself.
As a noun, your surroundings are everything around you in a place: the furniture, colors, sounds, and atmosphere. When you walk into a new classroom, you take in your surroundings to understand the space. Animals adapt to their surroundings to survive, whether that's a desert, an ocean, or a forest.
