sustainably
In a way that can last without harming nature or resources.
Sustainably means doing something in a way that can continue for a long time without using up resources or causing damage that can't be repaired. When a forest is managed sustainably, loggers cut down some trees for lumber but also plant new ones and protect the soil so the forest stays healthy for future generations. When fish are caught sustainably, fishermen take only what the ocean can replace naturally, leaving enough fish to reproduce and keep the population strong.
Sustainable practices think about more than just today: they consider whether we can keep doing the same thing year after year without running out of what we need or destroying the environment. A farmer who grows crops sustainably might rotate different plants each season to keep the soil rich, instead of planting the same crop until the soil becomes depleted.
You might hear adults talk about living sustainably by conserving water, recycling materials, or using renewable energy like solar power instead of burning coal or oil that will eventually run out. The key question behind sustainability is simple but important: can we keep doing this without making things worse for the future?
