A swimsuit is a special piece of clothing designed to be worn while swimming or spending time in the water. Unlike regular clothes, which become heavy and uncomfortable when wet, swimsuits are made from materials that dry quickly and don't weigh you down in the pool or ocean. People choose different styles based on what they're doing: a casual swim at the beach, surfing, diving, or racing in a competition.

The materials matter too. Modern swimsuits use synthetic fabrics like nylon, spandex, or polyester that stretch, resist chlorine damage, and help water slide off easily. Some competitive swimsuits are so carefully engineered that they can shave fractions of a second off a swimmer's time, which can make a huge difference in professional races.

The first swimsuits appeared in the 1800s and were incredibly bulky compared to today's sleek designs. As swimming became a popular sport and leisure activity, more comfortable and practical swimsuits were invented.
