symptom
A sign that something is wrong, often with your body.
A symptom is a sign that something is wrong with your body or that a larger problem exists. When you have a fever, sore throat, or runny nose, those are symptoms telling you that you're getting sick. Doctors look at your symptoms to figure out what illness you have and how to treat it.
The word also describes signs of bigger problems beyond health. If a classroom becomes noisy and unfocused, that might be a symptom of students being bored or confused by the lesson. If a garden's plants start wilting, that's a symptom of not enough water or too much sun. When your bike chain keeps falling off, that might be a symptom that the whole bike needs maintenance.
Understanding symptoms helps you solve problems more effectively. A student struggling with math homework might show symptoms like frustration, avoidance, or rushing through problems. But treating just the symptom (forcing them to sit longer) won't help if the real problem is that they don't understand fractions. Good problem-solvers learn to look past symptoms to find root causes.
