taboo
Something strongly forbidden or not allowed by a group.
Taboo refers to something forbidden or considered completely unacceptable by a group, culture, or society. A taboo carries such a strong prohibition that people feel it should never be done or discussed, often without even needing to explain why. It goes beyond ordinary rules: breaking a taboo can bring serious social consequences like shame, anger, or exclusion.
Different cultures have different taboos. In many societies, certain foods are taboo to eat. In some places, discussing money at dinner is taboo, while in others it's perfectly normal. What's taboo in one culture might be completely acceptable in another, which is why travelers sometimes accidentally offend people without meaning to.
The word also describes topics people avoid discussing because they make others uncomfortable. At many family dinners, certain subjects become taboo topics that everyone quietly agrees not to mention. In some classrooms, students might treat asking for help as taboo, even though teachers encourage it.
Understanding that taboos exist helps you navigate different social situations, even when you don't fully agree with every unwritten rule.
