tactless
Not careful about others’ feelings when speaking or acting.
Tactless means saying or doing things without considering how they might hurt or embarrass someone. A tactless person blurts out whatever comes to mind, even when their words sting.
Imagine your friend just got a bad haircut and feels self-conscious about it. A tactless classmate might say, “Wow, what happened to your hair? It looks terrible!” without thinking about how those words will land. Someone with tact (the opposite quality) would either say something kind or simply stay quiet.
Tactless comments often start with “No offense, but...” or “I'm just being honest...” as if honesty requires cruelty. Being honest and being thoughtful about someone's feelings are both possible at the same time.
People aren't usually tactless on purpose. They might be distracted, excited, or just not thinking ahead. But tactless behavior can damage friendships and hurt people's feelings. If someone calls you tactless, they're saying you need to pause and think before you speak and consider how your words will affect the person hearing them.
