tailgate
To party and eat near cars before a sports game.
Tailgate has two common meanings:
- To drive dangerously close behind another vehicle. When a driver tailgates, their car is so close to the one ahead that they couldn't stop safely if that car braked suddenly. Police officers can ticket drivers for tailgating because it causes accidents.
- A social gathering in a parking lot before a sporting event, usually involving grilled food, games, and team spirit. Fans arrive hours early to tailgate before football games, setting up chairs, grills, and coolers near their vehicles.
Tailgating as a party tradition started at college football games but spread to professional sports. Some dedicated fans show up with elaborate setups, including canopies, portable televisions, and full outdoor kitchens. The food ranges from simple hot dogs to ambitious barbecue feasts.
