tape measure
A long, bendy tool used to measure length or distance.
A tape measure is a flexible measuring tool made of a long, narrow strip of cloth, plastic, or metal marked with units like inches, feet, centimeters, or meters. Unlike a rigid ruler, a tape measure can bend and curve, making it perfect for measuring things that aren't perfectly straight or flat.
Carpenters use tape measures constantly, pulling out the metal tape to measure boards before cutting them or checking if a bookshelf will fit against a wall. A tailor uses a softer cloth tape measure to take measurements for clothing, wrapping it around someone's waist or shoulders. You might use one to measure your height, find out how tall your dog is, or see if your desk will fit through a doorway.
Most tape measures have a small hook at the end that catches on edges, and they retract back into their case with a spring mechanism. The numbers get larger as you pull the tape out, and many show both inches and centimeters so you can measure in different systems. When someone says they need to “take measurements” of a room or a piece of furniture, they're probably reaching for their trusty tape measure.
