tattoo
A permanent picture or design made with ink in skin.
A tattoo is a permanent design or picture made by inserting ink under the skin. Artists create tattoos using special needles that inject colored ink into the second layer of skin, where it stays for life. People get tattoos of meaningful symbols, names of loved ones, artwork they find beautiful, or designs that represent important experiences or beliefs.
Tattoos have ancient roots. Sailors traditionally got tattoos to mark their travels and achievements: an anchor might show they'd crossed the Atlantic, while a swallow meant they'd sailed 5,000 miles. In many cultures, tattoos served as markers of social status, spiritual protection, or family identity.
As a verb, to tattoo means to mark the skin with a tattoo.
The word tattoo can also mean a military display of music and marching, particularly the famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland, where bands and performers put on an elaborate show. Over time, the evening drum ceremony became an entertainment spectacle.
