A teacher is someone whose job is helping others learn. Teachers work in schools, teaching subjects like math, science, history, and reading to students of all ages. But the word reaches beyond classrooms: a piano teacher gives music lessons, a swim teacher shows kids how to stay safe in water, and a martial arts teacher guides students through discipline and technique.

Good teachers explain difficult concepts in ways that make sense, answer questions patiently, and help learners practice until skills become natural. A great math teacher might use pizza slices to explain fractions or connect multiplication to situations students actually encounter. Teachers also notice when someone's struggling and adjust their approach to help that student succeed.

The word can describe anyone who helps another person learn something valuable.
